Luis, Step Into My Office…Cause You’re Fucking Fired

30 03 2011

Luis Castillo has been released from the Phillies prior to opening day and another Rule 5 draft player (Michael Martinez) lives to see another day.  This move pretty much sures up the roster for opening day.  One reason Martinez made it over the aging Castillo was that Martinez can play multiple positions as opposed to Castillo and his ability to ONLY play second base.  Martinez can play the outfield, and for a team with no outfield depth, this asset of Martinez’s can not be undervalued.

The bench will most likely consist of (to start year, with Utley on DL) John Mayberry, Ross Gload, Brian Schneider, Michael Martinez and Delwyn Young (Valdez is “starter” to start).   The bullpen will most likely consist of Contreras, Madson, Romero, Baez, Kendrick, Bastardo and Herndon.

Confidence is still high entering the season with two crucial pieces shelved on the DL in Utley and Lidge, but with this staff, I think they can salvage the season.  Sit back and enjoy the ride Phils fans.  Opening Day is less than 2 days away.
