Shane Victorino Makes All Star Team…Then Placed On DL.

8 07 2011

That’s where he’ll be for at least 15 days

Shane Victorino yesterday won the final vote in contest to the 2011 MLB All Star Game held in Phoenix Arizona next week.  Shane was very stoked after winning the vote and today was officially placed on the 15 day DL with a thumb sprain… so much for playing in the All-Star Game.  Shane hurt himself in the Toronto series last weekend when he tripped over his feet in the field attempting a throw out a runner at third base.  It appeared at first that Shane had injured his ankle but we found out this past week that he was having MRI’s on his thumb.

My spidey senses are telling me that Shane and the Phillies knew all along that even if Shane made the team he wasn’t going to be competing in any All-Star game this year.  It probably didn’t hurt that Shane made his All-Star bonus as well.  The Phillies can boast that they have an All-Star center-fielder and Victorino gets all the accolades after having an All-Star season.  Can’t say I blame either side here, Shane deserved it, he’s having a career year.

Best record in baseball and with all these players on the DL at one point, some or most longer than 15 days…..Shane Victorino, Domonic Brown, Chase Utley, Carlos Ruiz, Brian Schneider, Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, Jose Contreras, Roy Oswalt and Joe Blanton all missing significant time.  3 closers the team has lost, how many teams can survive those types of losses? Not many.  Charlie Manuel deserves a lot of credit this season.  Ryan Howard and his league leading RBI’s deserves more praise than he’s gotten and a lot of credit also goes to the youngsters, Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo, that have shown huge sacs and stepped into bigger roles than expected flawlessly.  Let’s hope the second half of the season brings good health.
